How do I configure PortSIP softphone on a mobile or tablet?

PortSIP is a modern SIP softphone application available on Android and iOS, designed to make and receive VoIP calls from a mobile phone or tablet. It is commonly used by professionals who want to access their VoIP line while remaining mobile, without relying on physical IP phones.

To use PortSIP, the application must be configured with the SIP credentials associated with your VoIP line.

What you need before starting

Before configuring PortSIP, make sure the application is installed on your device from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

You will also need your SIP account details, including:

  • SIP username
  • SIP password
  • SIP server address

These credentials are provided once your VoIP line is activated.

Adding your SIP account in PortSIP

After launching the application, follow these steps to add your SIP account.

  • Open PortSIP and tap Add Account
  • Select SIP Account or Manual Configuration
  • Enter your SIP details as follows:
  • Account name: A label of your choice to identify the line
  • User name: Your SIP username
  • Password: Your SIP password
  • Domain / SIP server: The SIP server address provided with your service
  • Display name: Optional

Save the configuration. If the account registers successfully, its status appears as active, indicating that the connection is established.

Configuring audio codecs

For optimal call quality and stability, codec configuration is important, especially on mobile networks.

Access the account settings, then open the Audio Codec or Media section.

Enable only the following codecs, in this order of priority:

  • G.729 (if licensed)
  • G.711 µ-law
  • G.711 A-law

All other codecs should be disabled to avoid negotiation issues.

If G.729 is not available, it usually means the codec license has not been purchased. In that case, using G.711 µ-law and G.711 A-law is sufficient, provided the internet connection is stable.

Using PortSIP on mobile networks

When using PortSIP on 4G or 5G networks, codec selection remains important to balance audio quality and data usage.

G.729 is recommended for mobile data connections due to its lower bandwidth consumption. On Wi-Fi or high-speed connections, G.711 provides excellent audio quality.

Testing the configuration

Once the account is registered, a test call helps confirm proper operation.

Dial *98 to access voicemail when this feature is enabled. Successful access confirms that the SIP line is properly registered and functional.

If registration fails or calls do not work as expected, recheck the SIP credentials and ensure that the device has a stable internet connection.

Using PortSIP in a professional context

PortSIP is well suited for remote work, business travel, and mobile teams who need reliable access to their VoIP line from a smartphone or tablet.

PortSIP-compatible VoIP services are available from sellers listed on the Hivoox marketplace, allowing businesses to select SIP solutions adapted to mobility and professional communication needs.
